Today I visited The Hugh Lane gallery in Dublin, I hadn’t looked at what exhibitions were on and was very surprised to find Francis Bacon’s studio sitting in the centre of one of the floors. When I read ‘studio’ I imagined all his works were being exhibited, so I was very surprised to find the had actually relocated his physical studio into the gallery.
On the exterior wall there was a quotation from Francis Bacon that explained
“This mess here around us is rather like my mind; it may be a good image of what goes on inside me, that’s what it’s like, my life is like that.”
Chaotic is one word he used to describe his studio in an interview with Melvyn Bragg. You can see the interview here from 3:44.
It’s quite an interesting interview into understanding his views and ways of working.
